Goal
Science by Design is an initiative for the Government's Planet Science scheme managed by the By Design Group.
It consisted of a series of fun workshops and lectures in schools which used sport to inspire young people aged 14-16 to develop an interest in science.
Sustainability was a key concern for the project. Young people's engagement needed to endure well beyond the classroom.
By Design commissioned Qube to develop an online strategy which would help sustain young people's interest.
Solution
'Our strategy was to build on the interactive experience of the students in the workshop.
'We created fun, sports-based content, which we regularly updated, to engage students by bringing science to life online and encourage return visits.'
Content included:
- training kit: get help with easy-to-use learning resources
- trials: find out where you can have a go at sport
- cheats: learn how science can help you 'cheat' at sport
- the match: test yourself against David Beckham and others
- latest: top sports stories dissected for science
We also developed a strong visual identity for the initiative.
Results
The site is very active during evenings and weekends indicating success in meeting the objective of sustaining student interest outside school.
'Site usage grew by over 40% during exam periods demonstrating that students from earlier workshops were returning to get support and ideas as and when they required it.'
