With more people than ever enlisting all the latest optimisation techniques, the 'search optmisation' playing field is becoming increasingly level.
Your site has probably been built so that Google can spider it perfectly. Your meta data is all present and correct. You've probably optimised your content beautifully so all your target keywords are present at the correct density.
But if all of your competitors have done this, too, how can you stand out in the online crowd?
Give people something they actually want
The answer's a simple one: link building. Before you switch off, rest assured that we don't want to teach your proverbial grandmother to suck eggs (and let's face it, why would she want to?).
When we stress the importance of link building it is because it's the one area of search optimisation where you've got a real chance to stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Not by signing up to a million link farms to generate low-quality inbound links and not by a scatter gun approach to affiliate link building but by looking at why other people might actually link to you – genuinely.
Take it back to basics
Yup, we're back to the old chestnut of web content – the crux of any good web marketing campaign but we're now adding online pr and social media to your link strategy.
Not only do you need to give people something they find useful so they'll link to it and tell other people about it, you need to reach out to where they are active online and build conversations and relationships. You need to help them talk about you by supporting them with useful content and widgets.
When everything else is in place and you’ve hit that ‘Google-glass-ceiling’ with your competitors, taking the time to create a targeted link-building strategy that connects with your audience will give your site the edge you need.
